Can the Broncos Make a Sneaky Playoff Charge?

Updated: Aug 29, 2024

The Denver Broncos nearly made the playoffs last season after starting very poorly. Aided by the running game, offensive line, and defensive physicality, Sean Payton led a massive comeback and nearly sent the team to the playoffs.

However, the one issue was at quarterback, as Russell Wilson didn't fit the typical Payton bill of an accurate thrower willing to fit it anywhere on the field. Wilson seemed almost afraid to throw the ball over the middle the entire year and relied mostly on dump-offs to the running back for yardage. But after getting rid of him, they move into the Bo Nix era. Nix is the exact guy that the Broncos wanted and needed. A guy with amazing accuracy (the best in college football), experience, and the confidence to throw the ball all over the field. There are certainly shades of Drew Brees.

The defense isn't an issue. They decided not to resign former Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons, which may be a hit, but they probably assumed that his production would decline as he is getting older. Pat Surtain is still one of the best corners in the league and their defensive line is strong too. Payton helped turn this group around quickly and they should be on a good trajectory this season too.

The offense is good, but not great. The receivers are an issue, but the running game is great. It may be in their best interest to seek an offer from the 49ers for Brandon Aiyuk. Maybe even trying a trade for Devonta Smith who will have more competition for his role now that Jahan Dotson made his way to Philadelphia. But all that matters for Denver as of right now is that their quarterback situation is solidified.
