England Disappoints - Again

Tyler Stearns |

The England Football Team disappointed yet again today. They drew with Denmark 1-1. Other than their goal, there were no other real chances they generated. Denmark dominated play after their wonderful goal from Sporting Lisbon midfielder Hjulmand. Players like Hojberg and Andreas Christensen generated serious goal-scoring opportunities. England looked lost after their first goal - the same as the previous game.

First off, Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield has to be over. He is not good there and the position does not unleash his full potential. He needs to move to right back. He isn't as good defensively as Kyle Walker, but his attacking output is much better. Plus, Guehi and Stones have been solid at the back so far this tournament.

Phil Foden needs to move to an attacking midfield role. He is ineffective on the left. He doesn't make runs and can't cut inside on his weak foot. He showcased his versatility in the midfield in a few moments of the game, but that needs to be his permanent role in England.

England can't give up after one goal. In both games this tournament, they have gone in the hole after scoring one. Against Serbia, they seemed to have given up on attacking after going up from Bellingham's header. Against Denmark, they created very few true scoring chances following Kane's finish. They got away with it versus Serbia because they were a weaker opponent, but Denmark didn't let them get off easy. They have to stop playing defensively after their first goal. They have too much offensive firepower.

The midfield needs to become more compact. The midfield width is making it difficult to complete passes and handle the ball. Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham each lost the ball numerous times yesterday due to early pressure from Denmark. Jude and Rice had no immediate player to pass to and were tasked with trying to give the ball to the wing or the fullbacks from much farther distances. Shorten the distance between Jude, Rice, and whoever the other midfielder is going forward.

The issues this team has unfortunately all come from the manager. There are no players who are incapable of playing for England and all offer some value to the squad. It is up to Gareth Southgate on how he wants to use it.
