The NFL Draft is underway and day one was full of surprises. We saw teams draft quarterbacks unexpectedly and very few defensive players were drafted. Let's take a look at some winners and losers of round one.
Winners (Honorable Mention: Vikings):
Chicago Bears
The Bears were the winners of the first round. They got their franchise quarterback in Caleb Williams. They also got another star receiver in Rome Odunze who was one of the more underrated players in College Football last season. Their offense is set, and their defense is improving, so their team is headed in the right direction.
2. New York Giants
The New York Giants made the right decision choosing a wideout last night. The team was in desperate need of offensive stars at the skill positions last season and they got one of the best in the draft last night. Nabers is fast, big, athletic, and an overall great receiver prospect. They invested in their future with this pick and showed faith in Daniel Jones, an over-hated quarterback in the NFL.
3. Kansas City Chiefs
You may have the question, "What did the chiefs need to help their team?" After Rashee Rice's involvement in a driving accident this offseason, the team's receiving corps looked bleak. They were not great last year either, having multiple drops in big-time moments. Mahomes knows how to play with fast receivers with great route-running abilities and Xavier Worthy is just that. He holds the record for the fastest combine 40 times in NFL history. He showcased his ability to line up in and out of the slot last season and was an exceptional big play and red zone threat. Mahomes has his main target for the future.
Losers (Honorable Mention: Eagles):
Atlanta Falcons
What on Earth were they thinking? Drafting a 24-year-old quarterback with a known injury history at the eighth overall slot after signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year, 180-million-dollar deal? Really? They didn't even tell Cousins! Drafting Penix that early is okay, especially if you plan on having him start immediately. But to waste a first-round pick despite the defensive needs the team has makes no sense. Horrible move for the Falcons.
2. Buffalo Bills
After losing Stefon Diggs, the team was in desperate need of a receiver. They traded down to 33rd overall, pulling themselves out of the race for receivers like Worthy, Pearsall, and Legette. There are solid options still left at the wideout position, but the Bills trade doesn't have any justification at the moment.
3. Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers were a team who needed a receiver more than anybody. They had Nabers sitting right in front of them, ready for the taking. Despite Harbaugh's run-heavy scheme, skill positions are a necessary commodity in today's NFL. Alt was the best tackle you could take, but he isn't the right move. If you have Quentin Johnston as your starting receiver, it isn't looking good. Herbert will have more time to throw to fewer players now.
